DIY Design Living Room Reveal with Maune Legacy!

“Hop to it, get dressed! It’s the day of all days – it’s the best of the best!” -Dr. Seuss

I’ve been reading too much Dr. Seuss lately I suppose. Liam turned one last month and has a new found fascination with books. “Happy Birthday, Baby” by Dr. Seuss is still reigning at the top of his favorites list. As such, I have the book memorized and can quote it in my sleep. So naturally, I’ve begun speaking and thinking in whimsical, Seussical rhymes.

The above line was the first thing that popped in to my head last Thursday morning as I was getting ready for a much anticipated Living Room installation and styling day for my lovely Little Rock blogger friend and client, Jennifer Maune of Maune Legacy! The excitement that followed lived up to the rhyme – it WAS the day of all days and the best of the best!!

I don’t always get to see the finished results of a completely transformed room since I work in a range of flexible design service formats from consulting, to E-Design and DIY design plans, to Full service interior design. So when I DO have a full service project or installation or styling day add-on to a consulting or DIY project – meaning I get to be a part of the project from beginning to the end – it’s extra special and fun!! To get to personally see my design come to life before my very eyes – there’s just nothing quite like it. It’s my very own “HGTV” reveal moment. I live for install days!

If you’ve been hanging out with us on “the gram” these past few months, you’ve likely seen some behind the scenes of a special DIY Living Room design in the works. I’ve been pumped about this partnership with Jennifer from the start, and it is with the greatest delight I invite you to head over to her inspiring blog for the grand reveal post!!

(As an hors d’oeuvre, feast your eyes on a few sneak peeks of the finished room before heading over to Jennifer’s blog for the pièce de résistance!!)

Circle back with us on social media and join the convo to let us know your favorite part of the space!! And stay tuned next week for another exciting post taking you through the whooole design process of creating this dreamy living room!

Now, go have the “best of the best” Thanksgiving holiday! 🙂

New Website Launch & Giveaway!

You know the whole, “It’s not you, it’s me?” line? That’s what I finally had to say when retiring my original website. I loved it so. It was a beautiful site that served us well our first 5 years, for which I am forever grateful. (Pictured below with my first website. Thanks for being you and being with me from the start. Sorry/not sorry you had to go. PS: Thanks Reid Riggan for the photo.)

But during those formative years, I changed, my company grew, technology evolved, and so on. As such, we outgrew it, and it was time to part ways and create something new.

After a few years of dreaming and searching locally and nationally for the right web designer – the clouds parted and affirmative sun rays burst through the day I found Doodle Dog Creative in Austin, TX. It was love at first “site”. (Ha!! No but for real.) Nikki and her team were wonderful at understanding my brand, needs, and vision for the project and did a knock-out job designing and creating this dreamy new site you’ve found yourself in!

You can read more about the design process on their blog here!

There’s lots and lots more I could tell you about all of the intention behind this site, but I’m sure I’ll share more of that down the road. Today, I just want to invite you in with a big warm virtual hug and say, “Welcome!!” I hope you stay awhile and flip through the pages that have been so thoughtfully and creatively laid before you. I hope you learn something new about us (Production Design finally has a home within the site – hey hey!) and soak up some new inspiration.

To celebrate this few-in-a-lifetime occasion, I am hostessing my first ever giveaway! That’s right. History in the making right here, folks. Step right up and behold the pretties that could be yours…

1st Prize: Pair of Pink Custom Pillows – originally created for the Symphony Designer House XXIII, these pretty in pink pillow covers made from a Thibaut fabric are filled with the fluffiest down feather inserts that are extra fun to “chop” (pillow styling technique).

Interior Design Home Decor Giveaway Throw PIllows

Other 1st Prize: Pair of Paris Original Photography Prints – shot by yours truly whilst wandering around The City of Light, these are just two of a few 11″ x 17″ 1st edition prints, which will someday soon be available for purchase!

Two first prizes though?! Well that’s because firstly – you’re all winners in my eyes (awww…) – but mostly, because I polled my lovely Insta fam a few weeks ago on which of the above prizes I should give away. (Another great reason to connect with me on Instagram – you get to help weigh in on vital decisions such as these.) Upon seeing the results, I decided to give away both! The first winner drawn will get their pick of which prize, then a second winner will be drawn for whichever prize is still available. Win win, right? (Actually, yeah, that’s exactly what’s going to happen! )

To enter the giveaway, simply join the E-Party through the below form, then be sure to click the confirmation link that will be emailed to you shortly after. Then voila – you’re entered!

(PS: If you’re already at the E-Party, no worries! You can still be entered in the drawing by – that’s right, signing up through the below form, too! (It was created just for this giveaway, so your email/entry will show up here, but it won’t duplicate on the E-Party list! Because that would be weird to have two of yourself at the same party… ))

(PPS! If for any reason the below entry form doesn’t cooperate with your device, you can also find it by clicking here!)

Enter to win by joining Kathryn’s E-Party below!

I’d rather win the…

Are you entered? YAY! Then stay tuned to your inbox, because our two lucky winners will be notified via email, then announced on this here new site we’re celebrating!

I am so so glad I’ll see you at the E-Party now, too! I lovingly refer to my email list as the “E-Party” because I think it’s much more party-like than list-like to keep in touch with a bunch of awesome friends like you, hanging out on the interwebs together, sharing inspiration, ideas, and making our homes happier together. Right?

The giveaway will be open through Sunday night April 15th 2018, at 10pm CST! If you’re not afraid of a little competition, feel free to share this post with someone you think might want a chance to win some new spring decor, too! 😉

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Thanks again for being here today to celebrate with us!!

As a musician myself, I have always been passionate about the powerful art of music. To me, music is a universal language that can reach people on a soul level to encourage, uplift, inspire, comfort – communicating in a way nothing else can. I’m thrilled to be supporting music, music education, the ASO and all of their efforts through this exciting event, and I hope you will join us in support by purchasing a ticket to come tour the home – and perhaps do a bit of shopping while you’re there. All ticket proceeds and a portion of all furniture and decor sales go to the ASO Guild. So come on out!

AND… as a thank you for being here, being there, and being amazing in general… here is a link to purchase discounted tickets for the Crecendo Party (April 14th) as well as the Girl’s Night Out event (April 28th)!

If you have any questions about the event please feel free to email me at kathryn@kathrynjlemaster.com and I will help you find answeres asap! Hope to see you there!

Groundbreaking News: UCA’s Greek Village

UCA – home of the Purple Bears – is soon to be home to 5 new sorority houses and an NPHC meeting center, kicking off the beginning of an all new Greek Village at UCA in Conway, Arkansas!

Did I mention this was also my home? Yes. I am a UCA alumni and I loved the four years I spent on their beautiful campus full of historic buildings and lush landscaping going through the interior design program.

This is why I was so thrilled when I was presented with the opportunity to come back to be a part of this monumental project! In the last month, I’ve had the huge honor and privileged of working with UCA, their builders and architects, to consult on finish spec options for the sororities to choose from for their new houses.

The process has been fast and furious, as well as lots of fun. Here’s a little snapshot of the product researching, sampling, selecting, and presentation board building that’s been going on around here in the last several weeks:

The goal of the finishes design is to have a versatile, neutral palette that leaves flexibility for the groups to personalize and make each space their own. By providing a clean and simple, sophisticated color palette, I want to help them create the perfect canvas as a foundation for the furnishings and decor to come.

Yesterday was an especially special day in the project – the groundbreaking ceremony at the Greek Village site!  Each sorority had their letters set up in the clearing near the location of their future houses – too cool.

There was a fantastic turnout, and after hearing from several speakers including President Courtway, the event wrapped up with the highly anticipated golden shovel ceremony. The president and board members scooped the first shovels full of dirt, then everybody jumped in on the fun!

I was delighted to be included in the festivites, especially standing among all of these great and talented folks from UCA, Nabholz Construction, and Caradine Architects. What fun!

It was like a bunch of kids in a sand box, just more organized. Let’s face it – playing in a dirt pile is fun. Especially with shiny golden shovels!

Of course I had to get a shot with two of the fabulous ladies I’ve enjoyed working with on the team from UCA: Diane Newton and Wendy Holbrook!

What a day – and what a year it will be now that construction has officially begun. And by construction I mean our expertly excavated dirt piles. Luckily Nabholz will be setting up shop on site soon to take over from here. I’m sure they will appreciate the head start. 😉

Tah dah! There you have it folks. I hope you were inspired by today’s room reveal, and if so, I hope you will pass it on and share with someone who this may not have reached yet.

Thank you once again to my extraordinary photographer, Karen E. Segrave of KES Photo for so beautifully capturing this space so dear to my heart!

I was extremely blessed to be a part of such a wonderful event and work with so many amazing people throughout the entire process.

The key people I need to thank who contributed their time, skills, or resources to this project are as follows: the very talented Monica Smith of Sew Much for turning my textile dreams a reality, Jim Wawak and the Sherwin Williams team on Markham for donating a gallon of paint to transform the walls, Shades of Light for working with me to help the Springfield Sconce make it into the project, Joe Darr with Southern Reprographics for so carefully creating 1st edition prints of my original artwork, Larry Baxter and the All-Brite Electrical team for creating light where there was none, Louis Rodriguez for the impeccable paint job, Alex Juarez for helping make the new counter top possible, Rachel Danforth for being my expert shopping, framing, and  installation assistant, Barry Jones for your mad skills at everything from valance to sink installation and for being there to help every step of the way, Lillian Jones for being my design sounding board, bringing me coffee and for the thorough Scotchgard application to protect the runner, Nancy LeMaster and Jeff LeMaster for your apt timing and  assistance with the drapery installation, Stephen Jones for fixing me up with a taller ladder in a pinch, Hannah Jones for being my assistant and moral support throughout the tear down, Will LeMaster for winning the most supportive husband award and helping with all of the heavy stuff. 🙂 And to the rest of my outstanding  family and friends who showed up in big and small ways to help make my vision come to life and went above and beyond to support me throughout the entire event. I can never repay you for th encouragement you brought to me!

A very special thank you to my music teacher and mentor for 10 years, Helen Vanlandingham, for teaching me everything I know and appreciate about music, and for thinking of me for and believing in me throughout this project.

Thank you to everyone who came to the event in support of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, I cannot thank you enough! Your support for me and all of the designers, but especially for the ASO was appreciate so very much. Without an audience, there would be no “show” at a show house. You all are the best!!

Designer House Reveal: The Process

Today I want to give you a glimpse of the design process I went through in creating the Patio Bath in the ASO Designer House. The process is similar to how I begin every project.

If you missed it, be sure to check out my previous post with more before pictures of the space!

The next thing after thoroughly documenting the space on camera is to document it on paper through measurements and more notes. Mine are always VERY rough sketches and scribbles, but it’s the numbers that count. When I get home and get all of the numbers and scribbles into AutoCAD (drafting software)….

… I can turn this (above)… into this (below):

My drawings are my maps. To start with an accurate, scaled drawing means I’m not going at this blindly. It eliminates so many question marks and protects from wasted time and energy during the selection process. They are the absolute truth that let me see how much space I have between point A and point B, thereby dictating what size light fixture, mirror, frame, rug, etc. I have allowance for.

I put that allowance together with the needs I’m trying to meet within that space functionally and visually. With that information I then know what I need to be looking for when I start selecting. When I select something, I draw it to scale to make sure it’s the perfect fit from a functional stand point, but also from a visual stand point of appropriately filling and balancing within the space

Switching gears from the technical side of the process to the creative!

I knew I wanted to create something fun and whimsical but at the same time calming. Like a little daydream of sorts!  Since designers are responsible for the cost of labor and materials for their rooms in the Show House, I wanted to keep the cost reasonable by using things I already had if possible. I had yardage of these Dwell Studio fabrics on hand. They are some of my absolute FAVORITES that I’d swooned over for years and purchased awhile back with the intention of using them in my Master suite someday.

Thus began my inspiration for the direction I wanted to take the room. One by one I started thinking of items that would work wonderfully with these fabrics, evoking the feeling I envisioned. Then I’d add the items to my inspiration board.

An inspiration board is the first method I use when developing a design scheme. It contains anything from general ideas to specific selections. The helpful part of this is getting everything on the same page – literally – so you can get an idea of how it all works or doesn’t work together. It can include everything from specific ideas (the custom shower curtain I designed) to general ideas (a geometric rug).

Another method I use besides inspiration boards to give me rough idea of what things could look like together is creating a mock-up in photoshop over an image of the actual space. It helps to see things  in context of the room.

As each selection checked out from every angle (budget, fit, scheme, deadline) I started ordering, scheduling subcontractors, and spending alot of time on site installing what I could as items arrived. My sweet family showed up time and again to help me out with the install at various points along the way where I could not have done it myself. They are my heros! 🙂

Before I knew it… it was ready!

Don’t miss the reveal tomorrow morning!!

Designer House Reveal: The Before

Today I wanted to share more “before” photos of the Patio Bath along with the initial observations I noted upon first seeing the space that helped shape the outline and “punch list” of my design. Please enjoy this room tour from my perspective!

In my previous post introducing the reveal, we left off here:*enter room* It’s very… coral? I love coral! Why don’t I love it in here? Ah – it’s a tall skinny room with inadequate lighting. The coral is closing in around me and I don’t like it in this application. Glass shower… that’s nice. I wish it were frameless. The frame lines make for so many right angles. I think I want to hide it. Something soft. Note: I feel uneasy. Change wall color. Something calm. Add soft billowing curtain to cover shower.

Speaking of inadequate lighting, what kind of lights are even in here? *look up* 1…2…3 can lights. One over shower, two off centered over vanity. Two windows is good natural light. But I want more overhead light. I love light. It helps the space feel bigger. It helps you see. And the right light fixture makes such an artistic statement. Note: Add fun lighting. Something on wall over vanity, something in the center of the ceiling.

*look down* Hm, nice travertine floor. It looks cold though. Maybe it is cold, from the air vent. Don’t love air vent placement. Don’t love tiny fluffy crooked rug. But I want something soft. How would two bath mats work in here? They’d fit, but I don’t love where how they would fit. I want to unify the space. I want one rug. I want a runner! Note: Look for skinny runners (not the marathon type, the decorative type.) Ask if it’s a problem to cover air vent temporarily for “show.” If that’s a no-go, can I cut out a hole in the rug for the vent? Hmmm…

*look back* More coral. Yep, definitely need a new color. Hey, those electrical outlets and switches stick out like a sore thumb. I want to hide them. And hey, are there no towel bars in here? How will I dry my hands? Note: tall floral arrangement in corner to distract from switching/outlets and towel ring next to them to dry hands on way out the door.

*look to right* I like the vanity color, and the cute little feet. What’s bothering me? Ah – the countertop. It’s cultured marble with a poured  sink and back-splash. Why does it look like plastic to me? I would love to upgrade that. That would be expensive. Hey, there’s satin nickel hardware everywhere. Shinier would look nicer here. Note: Go over budget and look at upgrading counter-top. Something white. Marble? Quartz? Change out all satin nickel hardware for chrome.

*look closer at vanity* While I’m thinking of upgrades… how COOL would a glass vessel sink with a waterfall faucet look in here?! I mean this is alright… it works. But something sleek and spa-esque would really help accomplish the feel I’m going for. Note: Pinch pennies to get new countertop… so that I can get a  glass sink and faucet. Yep, definitely want to do that.

*look to left* It already has wooden blinds… those can stay, you need privacy in a bath. One again, so many right angles. The window needs to be softened. Drapery? Floor panels are sort of impractical for a bath, but especially one with a shower. Cornice? Valance? Yes. Nothing overwhelming. Just a simple “hat” for the window to soften the corners and bring in pattern/color. Note: Pull images of outside-mount window treatment style options. Think about fabric. Call seamstress for quote.

*walk back to entrace and turn around for another look* Yep. The shower is fine but nothing special. Drapery in front of it would be prettier. The countertop will do, but if I can swing it, and new one and new sink/faucet would be fabulous! The mirror is too square for all of the right angles already happening in here. Maybe round? Definitely want to add a wall sconce over the mirror, or maybe one on either side of it. Hey, a giant piece of art or a grid of several pieces would look swell between the mirror and shower! Okay, yes, good talk with myself. I have something here. This could be great.

Stay tuned to read about the design process next!!

Designer House Room Reveal Week!

Though the event came to an end a few short weeks ago, it feels like forever that I’ve been waiting to share with you all my work from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Designer Showhouse! I hope you got a chance to experience the event in person and support the music and work of the ASO and ASO Guild. If you missed it, well, I can’t really get the whole experience back for you. But I can hopefully communicate a snippet of the wonderfulness through my room reveal this week!

This was the event program cover, featuring the Living Room by Terry Williams of Terry Williams Interiors. (Loved the green and coral scheme!) At Home in Arkansas and renowned photographer Nancy Nolan did such a wonderful job capturing the event through these beautiful and informational programs. Below is an excerpt from the program describing the room I designed, the Patio Bath.

I’d grown so attached to this project, I might have slightly lost sight of the fact that it was temporary, and for “show.” It nearly broke my heart to take apart the room that took months of dreaming, planning, and preparation. One by one the art came down, nail holes were filled, rug was rolled up… and within hours, it all vanished. Well not all of it. I left a few things, for the good of the room. 🙂

THANKFULLY, my space will live on forever through the treasure of photography! I am eternally grateful to the wonderful Karen E. Segrave of KES Photo for so beautifully and meticulously capturing my little oasis, so that I can keep it for always and share it with you. I will be sharing her immaculate photography work through the “after” photos of my room that will be revealed at the end of the week, so stay tuned!

Today I’ll leave you with a preview of my first meeting with the Patio Bath:

Though the space was already off to a great start, it was completely transformed by the time I was finished with it. I’ll be sharing my whole journey through the process with you in the next week, from the inspiration and drawings to the finished result! So excited!!

(If you haven’t subscribed to my blog already, you can quickly and easily do so now by entering your email address in the designated box in the right sidebar of this page. That way, you’ll be sure not to miss a post!)

@forrest_addison_ - I am filled with wonder yet again as I look through these, trying and failing at narrowing down favorite moments, still in awe of this love of ours, beyond all we could’ve asked or imagined. 🥲🙏🏼

There’s a consistent calm + quiet in walking alongside you in this life, with the sound of puns + giggles, plans being made, hearts being shared, being the blessed echo for miles around.

I’m thankful for all the space for us to learn and grow as individuals and together. Thank you for your willingness to learn with me. I love partnering with you in cultivating the kind of relationship and life we believe in!

I’ve yet to see anger, bitterness, jealousy or other turmoil take up root in the sacred space we share, and somehow I know we never will. Your unending generosity of spirit, steady patience, and a truly unassuming heart that’s always believed the best of mine, softens mine more.

Watching and learning from you is an honor and joy. I’m still trying to wrap my head around your genuinely pure kindness. You’ve prayed for those who’ve persecuted us. You’ve “rejoiced with those who rejoice” even when they’ve wronged you. You keep no record of wrongs like I’ve never seen. You simply carry on loving well.

Thank you for being my safest place. For being to me among many things, one long exhale after years of oscillating between holding my breath and hyperventilating.

Even as I have those moments still, you listen to my heavy heart and witness my weary tears without judgment I’ve known before, because like Jesus’s “banner over me is love” always - you, too, judge me forever and always as “beloved”. I’m learning to remember and rest in that to counter the self consciousness that comes with learning to be truly seen.

Thank you for by your very presence and heart posture, inviting me to be myself, even when I am a taco level hot-mess.

I love you to the moon and back, to infinity and beyond! ♾

It is a delight to work with Kathryn LeMaster. She is a good listener who has been able to help us transition into a smaller home while still keeping the essence of our family intact.

My husband and I decided to update our house focusing on the kitchen and bathrooms. We were so impressed from the beginning with Kathryn! She was easy to work with and took our vision and made it all come together! She was extremely professional and we highly recommend her. Thanks Kathryn!! We couldn't be happier!!!

I have been doing business with Kathryn for several years, where she had played an integral role to enhance the quality and appeal of the visual impact of our furniture in TV commercial s. She independently picks products that perfectly match each commercial. She is also an absolute pleasure to work with. She is flexible when needed, and always has a positive disposition.

We asked Kathryn to create sets for a food shoot with multiple items. She created sets with for each dish and had them passed them off with the client who was out of town. She was extremely organized and methodical about how she purchased and approved each set. Not only was her work exceptional, her presence made the client feel at ease.

We highly recommend Kathryn. She listened to us as her clients and executed ideas based upon our design style. We had bought a new house and asked her to help us furnish, design, and style It. We appreciated her detailed drawings and ability to "show" us the vision and plan. She is quick to respond and allows for flexibility based upon timeline needs. Once deciding together on budget, she works toward that goal. She is a lot of fun to work with!

Kathryn assisted me in styling and accessorizing our new home. She nailed my design ideas and style based on the questionnaire and my comments. I was amazed at how she was able to match my style exactly! It would have taken me years to accomplish what she accomplished in one day. I would highly recommend her and look forward to working with her again in the future.
